Walnut & Copper

Walnut & Copper is an independent design studio based in the Netherlands. We design & hand-craft wooden lighting using black walnut wood & pure copper. Our design is a fusion of natural biomimicry and contemporary industrialism.

Our goal is to create unique artisan wooden pieces for your home. All of our projects aim to be artistic feature pieces that also serve a practical everyday function.
Each item is made to order, crafted by one person with care, creating a direct connection between the maker, the product, and the end-user.
Seb Gietl has no formal training in design or woodworking but was shown the basics of woodworking by his dad as a kid.
With a continual interest in wood and design, over the last few years a sketchbook was filled up with ideas for different wooden projects, particularly lighting.
Walnut & Copper is a way to turn these ideas into real products in the physical world and share them with others.
With several ideas and designs in the book, it’s important to refine and produce each project one at a time. The first of many projects to come is the Lumière Lamp.

Project #1: The Lumière Lamp.

“ This project came from a simple idea: to make something similar to the stage-lamp lighting but in a reimagined and wooden way. I also wanted to integrate the hexagonal shape because it’s very appealing and versatile to work with.

Finally, the magnetic adjustable stand is, in my opinion, the best part. Angled at 15°, the magnets allow you to fine-tune the lamp position to point up, down, left, or right and spin 360° in any direction. “

Created to bring the classic allure of old Hollywood to any space in a reimagined contemporary, yet warm and playful way.
In designing this we wanted to create the effect of the front shading flags lifting off the surface.
These flags also pay homage to nature, with the shape of the light representing a flower. Just as a flower brings brightness and happiness into a space, the Lumière Lamp is designed to as well.
The tripod stand is detachable and contains a magnet embedded inside of the solid walnut block.
This wooden block is cut at a 15° angle, allowing you to magnetically position the lamp on the stand in any orientation and angle you like.
Offering great versatility and practicality, you can direct the light upwards when on the floor and downwards when using it on a table or countertop.
Hand-crafted by one person, each step is done with care and purpose.
The lamp head is black walnut veneer, coated white on the inside to reflect light, and coated with a clear varnish on the outside to let the wood shine too.
The tripod base is made from solid black walnut with 99.9% pure copper legs, also sealed with a protective varnish to prevent tarnishing.
Both the stand and the lamp head contain embedded magnets to allow for a seamless, strong and satisfying connection.

As quite a scattered person, I’m constantly searching my home for keys, wallets, phones and pretty much anything I use on a regular basis. So, to have something that keeps these types of things together saves a lot of unnecessary stress while hunting for them each time!

This wooden wall pocket is a useful way to decorate a wall in your home while organising your things at the same time

They are made from steam-bent black walnut wood, the two pockets symbolise two complementary waves that balance one another.

Fun fact - an acoustic guitar was used to mould the shape for the bottom pocket.

It can be hard to find storage solutions that also add something aesthetic to a space. This piece was definitely inspired by leather wall pouches, but using the unmistakable qualities of black walnut.
While it visually stands out, we intentionally designed this to be slim and lightweight enough so that you could easily hang it on a wall and not worry about it crashing down or requiring any screws or nails to be attached.
Hand-crafted by one person, each step is done with care and purpose.
The pockets are both made of black walnut wood and set on a birch ply backboard.
