Day-dreamed designs brought to life.

“Over the last few years, I have always sketched down ideas for different projects, particularly in lighting. So, I thought it was finally time to turn my sketches into reality and bring some of these ideas into the real world. “

Walnut & Copper is an independent design studio started and run by Seb Gietl. Using primarily black walnut and copper for materials, the lighting designs combine elements of biomimicry with a contemporary edge of minimal industrialism.

  • Each piece is designed and made at home by one person (Seb) in the Netherlands. With plans to make it a full-time job, there is no time like the present to start this journey.

  • The first project is the Lumière Lamp - a hexagonal lamp on a tripod stand that is inspired by a classic stage light design. With features such as a magnetic stand that allows the angle and direction of the light to be adjusted and aimed exactly how you like it.

Why Lighting?

Why Lighting? 〰️

Lighting is unique in that it can be rare to find or create something that is both intended as a feature-piece and has a practical, utilitarian function. Lighting is even more unique in that it also entirely sets or changes the ambiance of the space it inhabits..

A little more about us:

  • Hi I’m Seb, I started walnut & copper as a way to put my ideas into the real world and share them with others.

Having no formal training in design or woodworking, l was shown the basics of woodworking by my dad as a kid. Carpenters and blacksmiths also run in the family and I’ve always had an affinity for wood and design.

Over the last few years, I had always sketched down ideas for different projects, particularly in lighting. And I thought it was finally time to put my sketches where my hands are and bring some of these ideas into the real world.

  • Right now I am still designing and making everything at home and I very much hope that this can change soon as I would love to be able to spend more time designing and making more pieces, and to be able to buy some better tools!

I am from Ireland but live in the Netherlands, where each project is currently designed and made.

  • Currently, all of our products are available to order directly via Wondrwood’s online store and our Etsy profile.
